What is a lab-grown gemstone?

A lab-grown gemstone is grown in a laboratory with an environment that mimics the growth process below the ground. The growth process takes about a year, and the end result is a gemstone that has the same physical, optical, and chemical properties as mined gemstones. They are not color treated or enhanced.

Because the environment in a laboratory is controlled, the growth process is more consistent and therefore produces high quality gemstones.

The cost difference between a mined gemstone and lab-grown of similar quality can be huge; as much as $100,000 difference per carat.

    Benefits of lab-grown gemstones

They are more environmentally friendly than mined. Digging into the earth and moving large portions of it is not required. Also, there is no chance of drinking water pollution.

They are more durable than mined because they have fewer inclusions.

They cost significantly less than their mined counterparts.

The difference between synthetic and lab-grown

There are a handful of ways to describe lab-grown gemstones, and we refer to ours as only one: lab-grown. Other nomenclature includes man-made, synthetic, or cultured. Why do we choose to call them lab-grown over the rest? For one, it is exactly as it sounds; grown in a lab. We prefer not to use the name "synthetic" as most people automatically associate that term with being "fake" or "artificial", which is absolutely not true. A lab-grown gemstone is the same as a mined one, they are just grown in different places.

It's important to note there are also gem materials out there that may be labeled as "man-made", which is true, but they are also imitation gemstones, or simulants, meaning not an authentic gemstone.
