The Science of Ring Sizing

The Science of Ring Sizing

Choosing an engagement ring is an exciting experience. However, one of the most critical aspects of purchasing a ring is ensuring that it fits perfectly. Understanding the science of ring sizing can help you make the right choice and avoid having to resize later on. Let’s explore how ring sizing works.

Understanding Ring Size

Ring size is determined by the circumference or diameter of the finger on which the ring will be worn. The sizing system typically uses numerical sizes, which vary between countries. In the U.S., ring sizes range from about 3 to 13, with half and quarter sizes available for a more precise fit. At Soha Diamond Co., we use a professional ring sizer kit in order to get the most perfect measurement. If possible, our team likes to get more than one reading in order to see if your fingers fluctuate. If you’d rather the engagement ring be a complete surprise, you can bring us a ring your partner may wear on their ring finger, and we can find the corresponding size.

The Science Behind Ring Sizing

Fingers can swell or shrink due to temperature changes. Warm weather can cause fingers to expand, while cold weather may lead to contraction. It’s best to measure your ring size at room temperature in our private showroom. In addition, fingers tend to be larger later in the day. Weight fluctuations, pregnancy, and other body changes can affect finger size. In order to get the best fit, we recommend finding a size that fits you best most of the time. Our designer will help you determine which size this may be. But, if a resizing is needed after purchasing the ring, our Lifetime Service Plan covers two resizings.

Different Finger Sizes

It’s important to keep in mind that not all fingers are created equal! The ring finger of the dominant hand is usually larger than that of the non-dominant hand. We highly recommend bringing your partner in to get the most accurate ring size, ensuring that they will be able to wear the ring the day you propose.

Understanding the science of ring sizing can help ensure you choose the perfect fit for your engagement ring. By bringing your partner in for an accurate, in-person measurement, you can avoid the need to resize your ring immediately after you pop the question. Happy ring shopping!
